Thermoplastics

Thermoplastic markings are a good choice for a durable marking for asphalt surfaces. Hot thermoplastic must be placed on dry surfaces with the ambient temperature above 50°F. Prior to application, hot thermoplastic is pre-melted by heating from 400°F to 450°F. While in its molten state, it is applied at thicknesses ranging from 0.040” to 0.125”. At such elevated temperatures, it melts into the asphalt, resulting in a tenacious bond. Hot thermoplastic typically cools, solidifies and is track free within one minute after application.

Depending on the type of marking being applied—such as “short-line” markings (stop bars, arrows, legends) or “long-line” markings (center lines, edge lines)—hot thermoplastic is applied by the extrusion, ribbon or spray method.
